Abstract

AINUL YAQIN LANDOMANG, Efforts to improve the skills of dynamic positioning operators to support smooth operation of fiber optic cable maintenance on board CS. ASEAN EXPLORER. Supervised by Capt. Rachmat Tjahjanto, M.M., M.Mar. And Capt. Aries Allo Layuk., M.Pd. Cable Ship is a special ship for installing and repairing submarine cable communication systems. Maintenance, repair, and installation of underwater fiber optic cables also requires vessels like this, which we know are more popularly known as DP (Dynamic Positioning) vessels. Considering the up-to-date technology as well as the sophistication and high sensitivity of DP system devices on board a DP ship, a DP Operator (DPO) plays an important role in the implementation of the operation of the DP system and to achieve this need, it is necessary for a DPO who has the competence, skills, abilities, skills, understanding and knowledge and mastering well the operation of the DP system on board, and it is also expected that a DPO has sufficient background experience in dealing with suddenly changing situations that have the potential to cause a dangerous situation. The research was conducted by the author while working on the ship. The data obtained are obtained directly from events encountered in the field which are described in detail in the discussion chapter. The results of study show that there are several factors caused the lack of Dynamic Positioning Operator skills is due to the lack of skill of the DPO itself in operating the DP System, especially when facing external factors such as strong currents and bad weather. So that it takes a DPO who is skilled and experienced in operating the DP System during repair operations or undersea cable installation. Keywords: Skills, Dynamic Positioning Operator, DP System.
